Q&A with LaVonda Gary, Case Manager – Silver Care Program

As part of Older Americans Month, President & CEO Randy Colman sat down with LaVonda Gary, MS, Case Manager of our Silver Care Program about the realities many older adults face today and what younger generations should understand about preparing to age well.

Q: What are some of the biggest challenges older adults face today?

Three of the biggest challenges I see are financial instability, difficulty navigating healthcare systems and aging alone without strong support systems. Many older adults are not financially prepared for housing changes, caregiving needs or unexpected health issues. Others leave medical appointments feeling overwhelmed or unsure of next steps. And for many, especially those who have outlived spouses or family members, even simple tasks can become difficult to manage alone.

Q: Why is advocacy so important when it comes to healthcare and aging?

Medical appointments often move quickly, and some leave without fully understanding diagnoses, medications or follow-up care instructions. I’ve found that having someone help prepare questions in advance or advocate during an appointment can make older adults feel more confident, informed and supported in managing their care. Advocacy is not about taking away independence. It is about helping older adults feel empowered to make informed decisions and successfully navigate systems that can often feel confusing or rushed.

Q: What role does purpose play in healthy aging?

Purpose plays a major role in emotional well-being as people age. Many older adults still want to contribute, stay engaged and feel needed, even if their physical abilities have changed. I work with individuals who miss working not only because of finances, but because work gave them structure, routine and social connection. Aging well is not just about meeting physical needs. It is also about maintaining dignity, identity and a sense of meaning in everyday life.

Q: What are some signs it may be time to start conversations about additional support for an aging loved one?

The signs are often gradual. It may look like difficulty maintaining a home, increased isolation, missed appointments or feeling overwhelmed by daily responsibilities. One of the most important things families can do is start conversations early, before a crisis happens. Many older adults want to age in place for as long as possible, and having thoughtful discussions about support, home care or future planning earlier allows everyone to make decisions with more confidence and less stress.

Q: What should younger generations understand about preparing to age well?

Aging is something we should prepare for much earlier than most people realize. Financial planning is important, but so are physical health, mental health and relationships. Everything we do now impacts how we age later. I encourage younger generations to think beyond retirement accounts and ask themselves: Am I building healthy habits? Am I creating community? How am I investing in my future quality of life?

As more families navigate the realities of aging, conversations around healthy aging, senior support services and caregiving have never been more important. Whether planning for your own future or supporting an aging loved one, taking proactive steps today can help improve long-term quality of life, independence and emotional well-being. At Goodman JFS, our Silver Care Program helps older adults in Broward County navigate challenges related to aging, healthcare, isolation and daily living while connecting them with compassionate support and community resources.
