April is Autism Awareness Month
Every April, communities across the country recognize Autism Awareness Month and observe World Autism Awareness Day on April 2. These observances often focus on increasing understanding of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) — but the conversation typically centers on children.
At Goodman JFS, we believe it’s time to expand that conversation. Autism is lifelong, and so is the need for awareness, inclusion and support. That’s why, through our Joshua’s Path Disability Services, we are committed to empowering adults with autism and developmental disabilities and ensuring their needs are not forgotten.
How Many Adults Have Autism?
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), an estimated 5.4 million adults in the United States — approximately 1 in 45 adults — are on the autism spectrum. Yet, despite the growing number of autistic adults, public awareness, services and conversations often overlook this population.
Why Adult Autism Awareness Is Important
While children with autism often have access to educational supports, therapies and programs, these services typically decrease or disappear once a person reaches adulthood. Many autistic adults face significant barriers, including:
- Limited access to services
- Social isolation
- Barriers to employment, housing and transportation
- Misunderstanding or stigma in the community
Autism awareness for adults is crucial because it highlights the ongoing need for resources, inclusion and understanding beyond childhood.
Common Myths About Adults with Autism
Awareness also means challenging outdated myths. Some common misconceptions include:
Myth: Autism only affects children.
Fact: Autism is a lifelong developmental condition. Autistic adults continue to experience the strengths and challenges of ASD throughout their lives.
Myth: Autistic adults don’t want social relationships.
Fact: Many autistic individuals want connection, friendships and community — but may communicate or socialize differently.
Myth: There are no services for autistic adults.
Fact: Programs like Joshua’s Path Disability Services exist to support adults with developmental disabilities and help them live meaningful, independent lives.
