Sending April to Camp

February 20th, 2017 - jfsbroward

down syndromeJoshua’s Path received a phone call from Ginny, whose 20-year-old granddaughter, April, has Down syndrome. Ginny told us that April was accepted to a special entrepreneurial camp at Picasso Einstein. Picasso Einstein provides disabled adults with opportunities to explore, establish and initiate small business ventures with the main purpose of providing meaningful employment for the disabled individual.   April was awarded a partial scholarship to attend, but the family could not afford the balance. Ginny told us that she was raising April and her brothers after their parents died in a car accident six years ago, and that money was tight. Ginny was hopeful Joshua’s Path could help pay for April’s camp.  Joshua’s Path told Ginny that we would research this, and get back to her as soon as possible.  We spoke with our financial assistance director to see if she knew of any funding sources for camp. Joshua’s Path also mentioned there may be other needs Ginny did not share with us. We called Ginny back and told her there was a possibility JFS could help send April to camp.

Joshua’s Path put Ginny in touch with the JFS financial assistance department, and asked that she call us back to let us know the outcome. Ginny called Joshua’s Path a few weeks later to tell us that not only did JFS pay the balance of April’s camp, but we helped pay the family’s outstanding utility bills so their water and electricity would not be turned off. Ginny was also given gift cards from the Quittman Holiday Gift Fund so that she could buy gifts for April and her two younger siblings, providing them with joy this past holiday season.

Ginny’s situation is a perfect example of what we encounter at JFS. The client calls us with one specific request, and, in the course of providing assistance, we learn there is so much more to each individual’s story. Thanks to each program’s ability to work cohesively with the others, our clients’ stories have much happier endings.
