The Cupboard | A kosher food pantryMarch 1st, 2017 - jfsbroward
Dear Friend of Goodman JFS,
As a valued partner of Goodman Jewish Family Services of Broward County (JFS), I have some great news to share – we’re expanding our outreach to help even more neighbors in need. You may have heard rumors about a planned food pantry. I’d like to be the first to confirm the rumors and formally announce the creation of The Cupboard, a kosher food pantry aiming to help wipe out Jewish hunger in Broward County.
JFS has hired Stephanie Silverman Houser as The Cupboard’s director and leased 2,400 square feet in Davie that’s being converted into the kosher food pantry where Jewish residents in need will be served. With some 4400 Holocaust survivors, seniors, children and others who suffer from food insecurity each day, we envision The Cupboard as being a prime resource for addressing this problem.
A member of the South Florida Business-Professional Advisory Committee for the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, Stephanie also is a trustee of the Jewish Women Funders in Broward County. She’s overseeing conversion of The Cupboard into an inviting food resource. We’re accepting donations to underwrite $275,000 in start-up and operational costs, as well as professional contracting assistance for The Cupboard. Later this month, we will launch a food drive and begin stocking the shelves with non-perishable food items for a spring grand opening.
The Cupboard initially will serve as a “choice market,” where people come and choose the items they need. We also envision using volunteers to make deliveries of food to those who are homebound.
It’s a major undertaking … but one we believe is well worth the effort. Wherever possible, we’ll source kosher food from food drives, retail outlets, and agencies such as Feeding South Florida. However, we won’t be able to fill The Cupboard or engage volunteers without the help of others, such as you.
We ask you to spread the word so every Jew in need knows he or she can get food for their next meal at The Cupboard. And, if you know of someone who can provide financial assistance, including naming rights for The Cupboard, have them contact Stephanie or me. Every gift is welcome.
Ultimately, this is our – your – gift to Jews across Broward County who are hungry. Let’s be their heroes. If you have questions or wish to help, feel free to reach out to us at firstname.lastname@example.org / email@example.com, 954 370 2140, or go online at www.jfsbroward.org/food-pantry/ to donate.
Let’s ensure no Jew in our community goes to bed hungry at night. Help Fill The Cupboard.
