 EMERGENCY HURRICANE SUPPORT

In 2005, we survived Hurricane Wilma. Thousands lived for days or weeks without electricity or phone service, many lost their homes, and some became impoverished paying mortgage or maintenance and living elsewhere for months. Jewish Family Service is here to help. We work with a network of agencies in place to support the neediest before and after a hurricane lands.

JFS provides hurricane supplies in preparation for the eventual loss of power. Additionally, we assist clients with the purchase of medication, bedding, food, water, radios, flashlights, or gas so that the elderly and families with minimal resources can survive their losses. JFS can also provide critical assistance for the displaced.  Care managers may call clients in difficult circumstances to make sure they have survived safely and that any homebound senior or disabled client’s needs are being met. Clients are also encouraged to call their Care Manager or to simply let the office know of their status.

Call JFS at 954-370-2140 for help with your hurricane needs.

Hurricane Wilma Support

A grant that JFS has received from the American Red Cross Hurricane Recovery Program in partnership with the Donors Forum of South Florida is providing in-home counseling, education and skill-building workshops to elderly victims of Hurricane Wilma.

JFS is currently providing in-home counseling to dozens of the hurricane’s elderly victims.  JFS also offers community workshops on stress relief to teach the skills to better deal with hurricane related stress. The programs aim to help seniors gain a better emotional outlook on their lives while learning about opportunities for in-home and community-based support.

Any condo association or group that serves a senior population is encouraged to call JFS to host a workshop/educational forum or to distribute materials to residents. Please call 954-370-2140 for more information.

All residents should be prepared if basic services such as water, gas, electricity or telephones are cut off for an extended period of time. Local governments and relief workers should know if you or a member of your family is vulnerable in an emergency. http://www.broward.org/atrisk/welcome

Hurricane Support for People with Disabilities

It is especially important for residents with disabilities to be prepared before an emergency occurs. Broward County has a special web page devoted to the hurricane needs of persons with disabilities. http://www.broward.org/atrisk/disabled

Emergency plans must fit each individual's unique circumstances. If you are disabled and cannot find the help you need, please call JFS for assistance.
